ITALIANS HUNTING FOR THE U23 LOMBARDIA: SAVINO AIMS FOR REDEMPTION AFTER 2ND PLACE IN 2024. ONES TO WATCH: BRACALENTE, ARRIGHETTI, VESCO, TRAVELLA, MELLANO, AND BELLETTA.

Il Lombardia U23 has been missing from Italian hands since 2019, the year when Andrea Bagioli claimed victory in Oggiono. Federico Savino, the 21-year-old from Pisa riding for Soudal Quick-Step Development, came close last year, finishing just behind Frenchman Brieuc Rolland, as did Mattia Petrucci, who took second in 2021 behind another French rider, Paul Lapeira.

Looking to challenge the foreign riders—who on paper appear unbeatable—will be none other than Savino, who once again leads the Belgian team Soudal Devo. The Tuscan is eager for redemption and is fully intent on making up for the disappointment suffered in 2024, when he was beaten at the photo finish by Rolland.
But Savino won’t be the only contender for a potential victory. Perhaps the most reliable threats come from MBHBank Ballan CSB Colpack, which can count on the climbing abilities and endurance of Bracalente, Chesini, Masciarelli, and Vesco—all riders who excel in the mountains and can handle long distances.

Another strong name to watch is the Bergamasco Arrighetti from Biesse Carrera Premac, whose skills make him a dangerous presence. We could also see riders like Mellano (XDS Astana Devo), Travella (VC Mendrisio), Belletta (Solme Olmo), Cattani (Technipes InEmiliaRomagna), Volpato (Campana Imballaggi), and Bosio (General Store Essegibi F.lli Curia) playing key roles in decisive race moments and contesting the finish on Viale Vittoria.

All of them have had solid performances in the lead-up and appear to be in good form. But as always, the final word belongs to the road.
