The Velo Club Oggiono rejects the UCI’s decision to schedule the Under 23 European Road Championship on the same day as the Italian race Il Lombardia U23, namely Saturday, October 4. The decision taken by cycling’s highest authority has caused deep resentment, as it failed to consider one of the most anticipated and historic races on the international Under 23 calendar.
"It’s a decision that greatly upsets us because of the attitude shown by UCI leadership towards our event," stated Velo Club Oggiono president Daniele Fumagalli in a firm tone. "Choices like this are a defeat for everyone. Because at this point, it seems only money matters and nothing else. I am not looking for controversy, but we demand respect. A race like ours, approaching its centenary, deserves nothing but respect. And if that respect is missing from those who are supposed to lead, then my outburst will serve no purpose. Il Lombardia U23," continued Fumagalli, "has a long history dating back to 1911: it has always given its best year after year, becoming a prestigious fixture for the finest talents in the category. Scheduling the European Championship on the same day proves that we have been betrayed by those who should be protecting us. But we, and I speak on behalf of the entire Velo Club, will never give up—even if such an affront has struck us to the core."
And our Federation remains silent, when instead it should be raising its voice to defend those races that represent the heritage of Italian cycling. Meanwhile, the effect of the “European” race—set to take place in France—is already being felt. Teams such as Tudor and Arkéa Development have withdrawn their entries from Il Lombardia U23. And in Oggiono, they now hope other teams will not follow suit. This is the reality—so congratulations, UCI.
